Charles "Louie" Merritt

January 13, 1923 - October 15, 2014

Charles "Louie" Merritt, 91 of Salem departed this life on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 in Genesis Health Care Center, Salem. He was born on January 13, 1923 in Salem a son of the late Dewitt and Etta Wanda Hart Merritt. On April 10, 1953 he married Chesna Helen McConnell Merritt who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Beth Ann Gill, Fairmont, Patty Demorest and husband John, Salem, four grandchildren, Louie Baker, Misha Nicole Hymes, John Lee Gill Jr. and David L. Gill, nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. One grandson Chad Baker, 4 brothers and 2 sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Merritt was a former employee of Pittsburgh Plate, Ingersol Rand, City of Salem and had retired from Judel Glass as a Tank Worker. He had served in the National Guard and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Louie was a member of the Salem Church of God. He enjoyed going to church, NFL Football, always rooting for Minnesota Vikings and Major League Baseball where he followed the Cincinnati Reds. Louie enjoyed working on his farm and gardening. Funeral services will be conducted in the Salem Church of God, 119 State St. Salem on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 11:00AM with Pastor Mike Cox presiding. Mr. Merritt will lie in state one hour prior to his service. Interment will follow in the K of P Memorial Park, Salem with full military graveside rites being accorded by the Combined Doddridge County Veterans Organizations. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Sunday, October 19, 2014 from 4-8PM. Expressions of sympathy may be extended to the family at www.harbertfuneralhome.com.
