SFC Frederick Eugene Barker, 73 of Jerome Ave. Mt. Clare passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his loving family; following an extended illness, throughout which he was cared for by his loving spouse. He was born on May 19, 1939 at Brown a son of the late Dewey W. and Muriel Dennison Barker. On August 17, 1957 he married Carol Ann Baker Barker who survives. Also surviving is one daughter, Diana Anderson and husband Doug, Lost Creek, three sons, Frederick E. Barker II and wife Kirsten, Gloucester, VA, Eddie Barker, Randall Barker and wife LeVella, both of Mt. Clare, 17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. They will all miss his strong presence in the family and his enduring sense of humor. Other survivors include, one brother, Ralph “Bud” Barker, Fairmont, three sisters, Garnet Shanks, Bridgeport, Sue Ann Lucante and husband Jim, Nancy Lucante, both of Stonewood, one sister-in-law, Phyllis Barker, AZ, several nieces and nephews and one special niece, Jo Ann Barker, Clarksburg. Six brothers, Dewey Lee, Richard, Russell, Jack, Billy Gene and Burl Barker, two sisters, Kathleen LeMasters and Mary Elouise Barker and one nephew, Robert Barker preceded him in death. Mr. Barker was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Viet Nam Conflict. He was a master Parachutist with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Units. Fred was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and several other medals. After serving in the Army he was a Harrison County Deputy and worked as a salesman and manager for Electrolux. Fred opened the Vac Shack in 1983 and operated it until his retirement. He was a member of Clarksburg Lodge # 155 AF &AM and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason with membership in Clarksburg and Wheeling Bodies. At Fred’s request he was cremated and private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Expressions of sympathy may be extended to the family at www.harbertfuneralhome.com.
