Obituary-Salem-James Edward Plaugher, 88, of Salem went home to be with his Lord on April 2, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 17, 1933 in Doddridge County a son of the late Cecil Ernest and Buie Clarice Freeman Plaugher. On May 18, 1957 he married Phyllis Skinner Plaugher who survives. Also surviving are four sons, Mark E. Plaugher (Ronda), Pataskala, OH, Michael R. Plaugher (Gina), Gahanna, OH, Kevin James Plaugher (Teresa), Hamilton, OH, Timothy Dale Plaugher (Susan), Lansdale, PA, grandchildren, Tyler M. Plaugher, Michael C. Plaugher, Matthew K. Plaugher, Chandra Grupenhof, Marisa Bobbitt, Rachel J. Plaugher, Stephanie L. Plaugher, Samuel T. Plaugher, Abby N. Plaugher and Tanner E. Plaugher, eight great grandchildren, one niece and three nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Haymond Plaugher and one sister, Ernestine Randolph. Mr. Plaugher was retired from the Harrison County Board of Education as a maintenance worker with 23 year's service. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in the Korean Conflict. Jim was a former Mayor of Salem and had also served as City Manager. He was an avid sports fan following all WVU sports, Pittsburgh Steelers Football and Pirates Baseball. He was a member of the Crimson River Baptist Church. The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice for their wonderful care and Becky Stedman of the Veterans Administration for her kind service to the family. Funeral services will be conducted in the Open Door Tabernacle, Patterson St. Salem on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Denver Burnside and Pastor Dennis Estes presiding. Mr. Plaugher will lie in state from 12 noon until time of service. Interment will follow in the Big Isaac Cemetery with full military honors being accorded by the Harrison County Veterans Organizations. The family will receive friends in the Harbert Funeral Home 287 W. Main St. Salem on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 from 2-8 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be extended to the family at www.harbertfuneralhome.com.
